After your baby’s tongue tie release, it’s normal to be unsure about the healing and adjustment period. This guide is here to reassure you about what to expect during the healing process and help your baby begin to feed more comfortably and without restriction.

Healing Process

The area where your baby’s tongue tie was released will begin to heal quickly — babies have an incredible ability to heal! Over the first few days, a small white patch will appear underneath your baby’s tongue. This is called the “white diamond” and is simply a wet scab or fibrin patch that forms during normal healing. It may look unusual, but rest assured that it’s harmless and isn’t painful. It will gradually disappear on its own within 1-2 weeks.

Feeding After the Release

It’s important to know that the adjustment period can bring ups and downs, especially during the first week after release. You may notice feeding improves one moment, then feels more challenging again as your baby adjusts to using muscles they haven’t used before. Think of it like delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after a workout – the muscles are learning and strengthening with every feeding session!

By the second week, most babies start showing more consistent improvement in feeding. You might notice a better latch, less nipple pain, improved milk transfer, and a calmer baby overall. However, it’s also normal to see occasional regressions, often tied to growth spurts or developmental progress. By six weeks, your baby will have reached maximum tongue strength, allowing them to feed with comfort and efficiency.

What Can Still Happen

After the tongue tie release, you may notice some reduction in clicking sounds during feeding, but these sounds may not disappear entirely. This is typically because the palate is still high and narrow, which takes months to broaden with correct tongue posture. Encouraging a deeper latch during breastfeeds or upright paced feeding for bottle-fed babies can help minimize clicking and gulping while supporting oral development over time.

Correct oral posture — with the tongue resting in the palate during sleep — also helps promote long-term palate growth, proper breathing, and improved oral development. Parents often notice their babies experience less gulping, air swallowing, or trapped wind, leading to fewer feeding-related discomforts such as excessive burping or gassiness.

Exercises and Aftercare

At this clinic, observed reattachment rates are less than 1% when exercises are performed consistently. These gentle stretches are recommended for three weeks to support proper healing and minimize reattachment risk. They only take a moment after feeds and play an essential role in ensuring your baby’s progress.

For extra comfort during stretches, you may use a small smear of pure organic coconut oil or expressed breast milk; (while irritation or allergies to coconut oil are very rare, discontinue use if any reaction occurs.)

Most babies tolerate these stretches very well, and I’ll provide you with easy-to-follow instructions to ensure you feel confident performing them.

Occasionally, scar tissue may feel tighter over time, which some people confuse with reattachment. This often improves naturally with healing, oral movement, or gentle coconut oil massage.

What Parents Often Notice

Parents often share that they begin noticing positive changes after the release, such as a better latch, less pain while feeding, improved milk transfer, and a happier baby. Many parents also report that their baby is experiencing less gulping, air swallowing, and trapped wind, which greatly reduces feeding-related discomfort. Progress can vary depending on your baby, and it’s important to be patient during this adjustment period. Temporary setbacks may occur due to growth spurts or regressions, but the overall trend will be toward improvement, particularly from week two onward!

This guide is here to reassure you about what’s normal during the healing and adjustment process. If you have any concerns or questions during this process, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Remember, every baby’s journey is unique, but healing and improved feeding are steps they will take naturally with your support.

Welcome to this next step of your journey!
