{"id":19,"date":"2019-01-13T17:34:19","date_gmt":"2019-01-13T17:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tonguetiecork.ie\/wp\/?page_id=19"},"modified":"2025-11-10T15:56:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T15:56:10","slug":"tongue-tie","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tonguetiecork.ie\/?page_id=19","title":{"rendered":"TONGUE TIE"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/tonguetiecork.ie\/?p=334\"><strong>BOOK ONLINE<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 330px;\">WHAT IS TONGUE TIE?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>A tongue tie is a membrane that is too tight under the tongue called a frenulum, this tight membrane can restrict tongue movement, and anchor the tongue down to the floor of the mouth, this can lead to breastfeeding difficulties as well as bottle-feeding issues such as bloating, discomfort, colic, reflux, leaking during feeds at corners of the mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Tongue tie can affect as many as 10% of babies born, maybe more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-156\" src=\"https:\/\/tonguetiecork.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_4588-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Anterior tongue tie<\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-142\" src=\"https:\/\/tonguetiecork.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/posterior-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"165\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Posterior Tongue tie<\/h3>\n<div>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>SYMPTOMS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (Baby) \u00a0Difficulty latching<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Small or narrow latch<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Constant feeds<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fussing\/ Colic<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Clicking sound during feeds, breast and bottle<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Irritated \/windiness<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Seems unsatisfied after feed<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Gumming or chomping on the nipple \/ or bottle<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Leaking milk from mouth during feeds<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Gasping, coughing when milk comes<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Slow weight gain (but not always)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0When breastfeeding:\u00a0 Nipple damage<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Painful feeds<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Blanched or &#8216;lipstick&#8217; shape<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Blocked ducts<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mastitis, Recurring candida<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<b> \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>ASSESSMENT<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An assessment is done by evaluating the following:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing how the baby latches and feeds (breastfeeds or bottle feeds): narrow latch, clicking, dribbling, suck-swallow-breath. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examining inside the baby&#8217;s mouth, which may identify many problems such as oral thrush, lip tie etc. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examining the frenulum under the tongue and its effect on tongue mobility and tongue function.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluating the tongues movement, lift, restriction, cupping and extension.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also weigh the baby and calculate the baby&#8217;s present rate on growth percentile.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b>PROCEDURE<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is clear evidence that there is a tongue tie causing difficulty, we will offer to release it. \u00a0We will explain the procedure, and if you would like to go ahead with the tongue tie release, we will ask you to sign a consent form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the baby is swaddled, then the tight membrane under the tongue, known as the frenulum, is snipped. This is called a tongue tie release, or frenotomy. This minimally invasive procedure takes seconds, and there may be just a few drops of blood, which usually stops as soon as the baby is comforted, or by compression with a sterile gauze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, there is an immediate improvement with breastfeeding, latch, suck, and relief in nipple pain and bottle fed babies often feed more easily, without tiring so quickly. In other cases, improvements can be more gradual, from 3-4 days to a few weeks later.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>RISKS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The risks associated with this minor surgical procedure are rare but as with any surgical procedure, risks exist. A small amount of bleeding is expected, however heavy bleeding is rare (approx 1 in 3000 &#8211; 5000) In which case a transfer to hospital may be required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Risk of injury to surrounding structures such as nerves, vessels, tissue or glands is also very rare. Lastly, risks of a localised infection are also very rare: 1 in 10,000 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b>AFTER THE PROCEDURE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We encourage suck exercises and gentle tongue lifting \u00a0to encourage optimum tongue function and reduce the risk of reattachment. This is done in a very gentle and kind way, and should not upset the baby at all, if the baby is upset you should stop and sooth him or her. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottle-fed babies will be shown up-right paced feeding for babies comfort.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will receive an individual plan regarding feeding, latch and follow up care. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>FOLLOW UP &amp; REVIEW<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deirdre will follow up the day after the procedure with a telephone consultation to answer questions and give any necessary tips.
